Morocco’s Largest Desalination Plant to Meet Agricultural and Drinking Water Needs with Sustainable Energy

Mar 19, 2020

One of the largest desalination plants in the Mediterranean and African regions, where SUPERLIT is also a partner, was recently visited by King Mohammed VI of Morocco.

As part of Morocco's “National Strategy for Water and Forests: Green Generation 2020-2030” program, the Agadir facility will desalinate seawater for use in agricultural irrigation. This strategy aims to promote sustainable development in the agricultural sector.

The project is designed to supply 150,000 m³ of drinking water daily while also irrigating 15,000 hectares of agricultural land. Initially, the facility will have a capacity of 275,000 m³ of desalinated water per day and stands out for its sustainable energy options, including wind power, which will support clean energy use in Africa.

This innovative project in the Agadir region has been developed through a partnership with the international company Abengoa, Morocco's National Electricity and Drinking Water Office (ONEE), BMCE Bank, and SUPERLIT.
